Customer info / context
Norwood Industries is a group of 6 secondary school students from The Norwood School in South London. Together with 6500 other teams across the world, they compete in the First Tech Challenge: a robotics challenge where student teams must design, build and program a robot from scratch.
This year, Norwood Industries reached out to us, interested in a sponsorship deal. We happily accepted their request and offered to 3D print all of the components free of charge! We also provided the team with free CAD resources allowing them to learn how to effectively design for 3D print and assembly.
Benefits of AX3D / additive manufacturing
Norwood Industries chose to use additive manufacturing to produce their robot. Some of the reasons include:
1. Manufacturing on-demand
2. Unlimited custom versions
3. Low lead-times
4. Parts ready for use

Result
With FDM 3D printing we were able to print over 70 parts for Norwood Industries in under a month, allowing them to compete in the National Championship where they went undefeated in qualifying, set 8 national records and place 1st out of over 500 competing teams.
As well as this, the team also won the Judges' Design Award:
"The winner of this award had a very well-engineered design on paper and in practice. Even with the use of striking purple, this team managed to keep a balance between form, function and aesthetics. The reliable design of the double grabber ensured their success on the field." FTC Design Judges
